An alternative approach is out-of-band separation : the items can simply be placed one after another, with no delimiters.

Finding a copy with a missing band separation, means nothing to the track list as a whole, because it's just a temporary situation until the next recut.

Regarding the merging of the first two or last two tracks, I suspect all vinyl copies " list " them as separate on the label and cover, but some copies may lack a band separation.
